Software Centre raises E3m

Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, raised an additional E3m in research funding in 2012 according to its annual report issued today.

New projects included research contracts with the European Space Agency, United Technologies Research Centre and several EU-funded research consortia. During 2012 Lero announced funding of E22.4m over 5 years through Science Foundation Ireland and technology firms such as IBM and Intel.

Lero also reported that it was awarded five new patents in 2012 covering areas such as self-sacrificing spacecraft swarms and methods of protecting autonomous systems. Forkstream, a spinout company, was established and it has recently been acquired by Openet, a leading Irish transaction management software and services provider. 170 Lero researchers recorded a 47pc increase in journal papers and a 41pc increase in conference papers during the year.

“Our researchers are in demand globally,” commented Prof Mike Hinchey, director, Lero. “The work which is being done in Ireland is world leading across a number of areas including medical devices, agile, cloud and space flight software.”

He said the prolonged Ulster Bank and RBS outage in 2012 was a reminder of what can happen when critical software systems crash due to badly managed changes. In the United States a recent report by the US Food & Drug Administration showed that 20pc of the medical device recalls in the US in 2012 were due to software faults. “Today it is almost impossible to lead a software-free life. Software is the enabling factor in smartphones, smart cities, smart homes, smart health and just about smart anything.”

He added, “Because software can be easily changed, it is often changed badly. Lero specialises in Evolving Critical Systems research which aims to develop methods, techniques, tools, and processes for the development and evolution of highly reliable software systems that maintain, or improve, their reliability as they evolve.”

Panasonic Lumix DMC-XS3, Latest Digital Camera with 14.1MP MOS sensor has a high sensitivity

Panasonic not only introduced the new Lumix cameras that rely on high zoom capability. The Japanese company also helped bring a compact camera Lumix DMC-XS3 that rely 14.1 MP MOS sensor with high sensitivity.

This digital camera is designed with a slim shape and body size of 14 millimeters. Although the size is quite small, this camera is claimed to deliver high quality images thanks to sensors that can reduce noise. In addition, this camera also features a 5x optical zoom and 10x zoom intelegent.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-XS3 also has the ability to record full HD video in MP4 format. In it there is also a feature called Intelligent Auto (iA) which enables features like Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection and Intelligent Exposure is done automatically.

For shooting in low-light atmosphere, there is a Handheld Night Shot mode. This mode can produce high quality images with a single shot.

I Only Want Cool Chocolate

I learned how to make chocolate confections from a master chef at a young age. I used the knowledge I learned from him to open my own store that sells these confections. Acer launches new Iconia A1-810

Acer Sales and Services Sdn Bhd (Acer) has recently launched a brand new 7.9 inch tablet that is supposed to be a cheaper alternative to its contenders Note 3 and Mini.

At half the price of an iPad, Acer Iconia comes with a Quad-Core CPU, HDMI output and the latest version of Android 4.2.2.

The design of the tablet is a traditional one noted Ting Meng Hung, regional manager for Acer and noted that it was quite thick compared to other tablets yet it is very light.

As for the hook-up there is a micro SD card slot, HDMI output and both a front and a rear webcam. The rear webcam is five megapixels (MP )and can record videos of up at 30 frames per second.

The tablet has a 7.9’ multi-touch five point widescreen that is intuitive and launches the apps instantly.

“An interesting characteristic similar to other tablets is that if the corner of the touch screen is kept pressed with your finger the rest of the screen reacts to other commands like scroll, launch or zoom,” Ting noted.

The tablet is equipped with a -Core CPU and one gigabyte (GB) RAM, ensuring the smooth rendering of high-quality apps and complex games.

The internal memory ranges starts from 8GB and can be extended via SD card up to 32GB.

For the operating system, it comes together with the latest 4.2.2. that run optimally with the component, Ting highlighted.

For this minimal price we have here a Tablet equipped with HDMI hook-up, Bluetooth and GPS and a Quad-Core CPU as well as a webcam that records Full-HD videos.

“At the moment we are only offering the wifi model and depending on the demand we may bring in the 3G version of the tablet as well,” Ting explained.

Software maker E2open plans more revenue, less BlackBerry

Supply chain management software maker E2open Inc (EOPN.O) expects its revenue to hit $100 million for the first time next fiscal year, after replacing its dependence on BlackBerry Ltd (BB.TO) and PC makers with a host of new customers.

Chief Executive Mark Woodward said he expected E2open, which went public a year ago, to boost its sales in the 12 months to February 2015 after adding up to 20 new enterprise customers in the current fiscal year.

“We do $80 million (in revenue) this year and we grow 30 percent next year. That should get us there,” Woodward said in an interview, referring to the $100-million revenue target.

E2open, which makes cloud-based software designed to assist companies in managing their supply chains, has more than doubled its annual revenue in the five years since Woodward took charge. Revenue in the fiscal year to February 28, 2013, was $75 million.

The company’s shares have risen about 35 percent since they began trading on the Nasdaq on July 26 last year.

Three of the six analysts covering E2open have a “strong buy” rating on the stock. The other three rate it “buy”, according to Thomson Reuters data. The company has a market capitalization of $460 million.

With a customer base that includes Coca-Cola Co (KO.N), Unilever Plc (ULVR.L), IBM (IBM.N) and Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O), E2open has been diversifying to cut its dependence on any one large customer.

Last year, that customer was Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry (BBRY.O).

Woodward said he expected BlackBerry’s contribution to E2open’s revenue to fall to less than 3 percent in the current fiscal year from nearly 15 percent last year.

BlackBerry, which pioneered on-the-go email with its handsets and messaging systems, has slipped into tough times as it struggles to keep pace with nimbler rivals.

Woodward said BlackBerry’s quarterly shipments of about 7 million units were between a quarter and a third of the volume contracted when it became a customer of E2open four years ago.

“Their usage of our systems, just because they are selling less handsets, has come down dramatically,” said Woodward.

E2open has, on average, signed up 17 enterprise customers in each of the last two years. In total, it has 76 enterprise customers – those which buy E2open’s software as well as pay for access to its network of suppliers and trading partners.

Computer maker Dell Inc (DELL) brought in 22.5 percent of E2open’s revenue in fiscal 2011. Now, it accounts for less than 5 percent – even though its contribution in dollar terms has risen, Woodward said.

“The original deal that we signed with Dell was for $3.2 million for three years,” he said. “The last bill we signed with Dell was for $3.2 million per year.”

British mobile telephone company Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L) (VOD.O) is the largest customer for Foster City, California-based E2open, having contributed 12.1 percent of the company’s revenue last fiscal year.

Another customer, Seagate Technology LLC (STX.O), held a 9 percent stake in E2open as of December last year.

No space for over-30s as relaunched MySpace erases its past

Did you pour your heart out on a MySpace blog and make hourly checks on your Friends total? Now the social network has been accused of erasing the personal histories of its dedicated members after a $20 million relaunch designed to bury its past and attract a new teenage audience.

The music-centred platform, which helped launch Lily Allen to fame and attracted 100 million users at its 2007 peak, is seeking to climb out of the social network “graveyard” after years of being a source of digital derision.

The site, lacking innovation and overtaken by Facebook, shed users and was abandoned by Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation had bought the company in a disastrous $580 million deal.

Backed by new investors, including singer Justin Timberlake, Myspace (after dropping the capital ‘S’) has been rebranded as a music-streaming service, with a new sleek interface, and an iPhone app for radio play and animated GIF creation.

The new Myspace has shown signs of life, attracting 31 million unique visitors and one million app downloads since a high-profile relaunch last month.

However its owners do not appear to want those loyal users, who stuck around even when MySpace became a tarnished brand, to spoil the party for its new target audience of young “millenials”.

Furious users complained that Myspace has erased all of their blogs, private messages, videos, comments and posts, when they try and log-in to the new site.

Myspace veterans, whose lives have been marked out by the blogs and photos posted daily over nearly a decade, are threatening a class-action lawsuit over what they see as the destruction of their personal histories.

One disgruntled member wrote: “I was a loyal user who never deserted Myspace. I used it almost everyday since 2006. I wrote hundreds of blogs that, to my horror, were simply gone as of last night with no prior warning given. That is no way to treat us. Please give us a chance to recover old blogs. This is like losing family photographs, and it is really horrible.”

Another posted on the site’s forum: “This is no different than losing one’s writing or photographs in a house fire, and I am feeling awful right now.” “You in essence just stole our blogs without permission to delete them. How dare you!,” complained another user.

Myspace, bought for just $35 million in 2011 by Timberlake and the Specific Media Group, told users that it had made changes to create a “better experience.” The company said: “That means you won’t see a few products on the new site. We know that this is upsetting to some but it gives us a chance to really concentrate on creating a new experience for discovery and expression.”

The “year zero” approach extends to stars who once built huge followings through MySpace. Britney Spears, who enjoyed 1.5 million Friends on the old MySpace, found her new “Connections” count set to 0.

Myspace won’t mind irritating 30-somethings who enjoyed sharing family photos if the network maintains a positive buzz from younger users since the relaunch, which featured the rapper Pharrell in a major advertising campaign.

The new app is ranked among the Top 20 social networking apps and the site makeover received positive feedback on Twitter.

Yet Myspace has been forced to respond to the backlash from its loyal users.  “Change isn’t easy and there has been a lot going on lately,” the company said. It told angry members: “We understand that this (blog) information is very important to you. Please understand that your blogs have not been deleted. Your content is safe and we have been discussing the best ways possible to provide you your blogs.” Pictures and music playlists can be located and transferred over to the new Myspace, the company added.

Founded in 2003 by a team of California web pioneers led by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, MySpace generated $800 million in revenue by 2008. Arctic Monkeys were among the bands who used the network’s music-sharing feature as a springboard for success.

Adobe Foundation Announces 2013-2014 Creativity Scholarship Recipients

The Adobe Foundation today announced the recipients of its first annual Creativity Scholarships, available to teens who participate in the Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) program. For the 2013-2014 academic year, scholarships have been awarded to 25 students from 13 countries, including Argentina, India, Kenya, Sri Lanka and the United States. Recipients demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, a strong creative portfolio and commitment to pursuing a career in a creative field.

Designed to ignite creative confidence in youth, AYV is helping support the next generation of creative thinkers and equipping them with resources to help advance their education. AYV follows a creativity curriculum and provides the digital tools, training and professional mentorship students need to develop essential skills such as self-expression, ideation, collaboration, flexibility and persistence. All AYV students produce original projects in animation, video, photography and other digital media categories, spotlighting issues important to them including poverty, bullying and climate change.

Google Glass for Dogs

California – giant, Google, is reportedly planning to develop Google Glass for working dogs.
According to a report quoted by the New York Post, Google has teamed up with the Georgia Institute of Technology to develop a wearable computer system. The system can give your dog an easier way to communicate with their owners. Or even a dog owner can see what is seen by the dog.
Project called FIDO (Facilitating Interactions for Dogs with Occupations) is
can make a dog bite or other means, to enable the sensor can send the information to the owner.
Google Glass is expected to be widely released in the market in 2014. Google technical leadership Glass, Thad Starner, has teamed up with professors at Goergia Institute to develop a computerized benefits to help working dogs.
Assistant Professor Melody Jackson said, dogs have been tested for use Google Glass that can activate the sensor by using his mouth. Jackson added Google Glass being studied to be used for a dangerous affair, such as detecting bombs.
